Artist Profile: Abena Oyiwaa

Overview
Abena Oyiwaa is a self-taught Ghanaian painter whose work explores the emotional terrain of African womanhood through a visual language she calls Afro-Fem Surrealism. Blending realism with symbolic surrealism, her practice focuses on themes of resilience, autonomy, and postcolonial identity.
Liquid Gold draws from postpartum narratives, presenting a mother figure in a pool of gold. Milk stains, skeletal forms, and a solitary bottle reflect emotional depletion and choice, while a vine behind her gestures toward recovery and regrowth.
