Overview
Sophie Pickering is a Brooklyn-based artist working primarily in handmade paper pulp to explore themes of beauty, trauma, and cyclical healing. Her work exists in a suspended space between painting and sculpture, where fragility and permanence coexist. Using intimate, dimensional compositions that reference landscapes, architecture, and personal archives, Pickering meditates on the ways nature—especially the ocean—offers a pathway to healing. Her process is rooted in materiality and experimentation, blending technical skill with emotional depth. With an MFA and experience teaching full-time, she balances concept and craft with care, constructing worlds that invite close inspection and quiet reflection.
