Overview: Zhilin Xiang (Esther), born in Changsha, China, is a New York–based lens-based artist whose work explores diasporic identity, generational memory, and cultural perception. Her evolving practice uses photography—often physically altered through burning or scratching—as a means of deconstructing visual narratives and evoking fragmented emotional resonance. Rooted in personal experience and shaped by cross-cultural perspectives, Xiang’s work invites viewers to examine the intersections of memory, displacement, and transformation. Influenced by Nan Goldin and Cai Guo-Qiang, she is currently experimenting with sound, writing, and alternative processes to deepen the sensory and conceptual impact of her visual storytelling.
